If it was about a 1950 it would be either a 6U narrow gauge or the wider 7U tractor but probably it would have been a 7U. From time to time there are guys that post the pictre of their D4s on this site so scan over the posts & you should find one unless someone now puts one on just for you.I,m sure you have lots of good memories. Also most the 6 & 7U tractors had the regular Cat blade on them that I remember but there were other ones installed on them too like a Laplante Choate esp. on the earlier D4s before he U models.

Hi!
I'm new to the forum and really enjoy reading the posts. I worked with my Dad in his excavating business, and have fond memories cutting my teeth on a D4 Cat during my teenage years in the mid-1950's. I put hundreds of hours on it backfilling ditches, pulling trees, and leveling lots.
I've been writing down things about my growing up years for my granddaughter and have been trying to add pictures to make the story more interesting. Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of the old D4 that I used to operate. It was of about 1950 vintage, had a big Hyster winch with a one-inch diameter cable mounted on the back, and as I remember had a big heavy duty 8-foot wide (was it an Isaacson?) hydraulic dozer. It did NOT have a canopy or roll bars to protect the operator. I remember the pony starting motor did not have an electric starter -- you had to wrap a rope around an exposed pulley in front of the steering levers and start it like an old lawn mower. engine.
If you have any pictures of a D4 equipped with a dozer and winch but without a canopy, I would really appreciate it if you could post them so I could copy them into my writings.
Thanks.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
