D-2 5U brake drum help

Hello all,
I'm currently going through my steering clutches and brakes. The Servicemans Ref. book gives the proper press tonage for the sprocket, bull gear, and inner clutch drum but mentions nothing on the brake drum itself. Would any of you know if the brake drum needs a preload press or not? Thanks inadvance.............

Hi dead axle,
the book says 15 ton press fit but, from personal experience at the Dealer 10 ton is plenty for D2 as well as D4 drums.

NOTE :- make doubly sure that the splines of both the hub and shaft are totally oil free or the drums will split also at 10 ton.

Being out in the boonies and not having the proper tooling, what I've done is to make sure splines and drum are clean with no burrs, rust, etc and warm the hub to the point it's too hot to hang on to for very long, shove it on a lightly oiled shaft and use a 3/4" air impact wrench to tighten.

None have split, nor have I ever had trouble with any coming loose. I realize this isn't the "proper" way to do it, but sometimes ya gotta work with what ya got. I've also done this with the D4 with the same results.

Ol Grump,

You bring a tear to my eye... another non-blessed way is to dunk the shaft in dry ice, heat the hub and tighten the nut hard. 15-20 ton
