When you get the rod out, check it close as it should be bent.
Seen it before.
If it isn't bent, check it for twist.

Here's what they are talking about, "Ant Farm" pistons. I think is was posted first by cc jersey.

That's ugly, I've seen broken rings but nothing that drastic, hope those ants stay away from my iron

Thanks Kelly, I was going to dig into my "piston collection" & post a pic, just in case nobody knew what I was talkin about...I have several that look like that, or worse.

Ok ! I got the piston out this afternoon . Here are a few pictures of todays scuffle..
I got to tell ya , that was a royal pain in the behind and everywhere else getting that piston out.
First that crank has to be in the exact right spot .
Second ya got to be laying just right.
Third ya got to be holding ya mouth just right , and with the right twist the darn thing will come out...the bottom....
I can see it is going to be caper getting back in.
Now the search is on for parts...Anybody got any ???

Doesn't appear that the damage to the crown of the piston had anything to do with the rings. Any ideas what the foreign body was?
I suppose you could make a light pass across the rough areas of the piston with a grinder and see if you raise sparks which would indicate it was a piece of steel if it left some imbedded.
Most common thing to end up on top of a piston is a chunk of valve, but strange things do find their way in sometimes.
Maybe you need to be looking in the head/intake valve runners/exhaust valve runner etc for "tracks" from whatever it was. Could be that the misfire was another cylinder that was missing a hunk of valve? Did you ever hear it run before it sat waiting on the repairs?

The foreign objects could only have come from the head or via ingestion, based on what we can see of the pistons (and that the ring section doesn't appear damaged). Therefore, I'd look at the injector/precombustion chamber/valves. If nothing is evident, then go upstream through the intake manifold back to the air cleaner. If you can't see anything, then I guess clean the top of the piston up and put it back together and get going again.

Yep, not what I expected to see...how did the rings look on that piston? Those chunks embedded sure look like ring pieces-in your first pic, the other pistons looked pretty good, but you should check them too, sometimes debris will get spit out the intake & sucked into another cylinder...weird...
Edit-saved the last pic & zoomed in on the top...it looks like there's a notch above the insert that ring chunks could go through. Is the ring still there? That steel insert would keep it from doing the ant farm thing...
