The localy famous D9 "Killer" got a new ornament with this nice little Cat 10 for it's display at the Erie County fair in Hamburg NY... This 9 belongs to the Winter family and is the first D9 they owned for the train wreck cleanup service they run. Biggest crawler tractor made when they bought it in 1956 or so.

TimT,
That D9 sure has a mighty big exhaust stack.
Even with all the newer, bigger crawlers produced today...the D9's still carry a lot of respect and awe. A classic machine.
That one's a beauty, and in great shape.
Thanks for sharing.

Yes Pat they have a big exhaust pipe but the reason is they were the first Cat tractor with a turbo on them & the turbo requires a larger stack to get the exhaust out.We sold so many of them here at the dealer I worked for & at that time the coal strippings was big plus the new Interstate highways were being built through the area here so contractors jumped on the buying market for them. They only had two models then at first, the 18A was an oil clutch tractor & the 19A was the torque convertor tractor with a dry clutch.

A couple of years ago I had the honor of meeting Mr. Ed Winter and he gave me a tour of his fantastic facility which includes the spreader bar from the legendary "Big Muskie" mounted on a semi trailer. That big stack has propane injected into it and when they hit the igniter the flame goes about a zillion miles into the air. Sadly, Mr. Winter passed away a short time ago. We have lost yet another Living Legend. Packrat
