Ok, I just picked up new bi-metals and steels for my D4-7U. With the new plates put togetherthey add up to 3.0625" which is 1/16" past the recomended replacement of 3.125". If I add another fiber and steel I'll end up at 3.34", if I add two fibers and two steels I have a total thickness of 3.619". Now at the 3.619" I have 13 fibers and 13 steels. Cat OEM is 11 fibers and 11 steels for a total of 3.523". Should I or could I have a mixed amount, ie 13 fibers and 12 steels or 12 fibers and 13 steels, or is it ok to have the total thickness a little over the OEM thickness by about 3/32". The conundrum continues.

Recommended replacement is 12 #3F5504 bimetallic and 12 steel.

What serial number are you working with and are they the early or late discs?
The above recommendation is for the early style.

I have bi-metalic and the recommended number in my book for the later rigs is 11 of each. The problem occurs when you start replacing the OEM with aftermarket. The aftermarket looks good and all but they appear to be thinner. Thats where the conundrum starts. At this point it doesn't matter the number of plates what matters is the total thickness. Have you or anyone else run into the "limit of how thick someone can go, since if its too thick I won't go anywhere because the clutch will always be engaged.

What are you using, aftermarket or OEM?
Also you keep referring to fiber but are using bi-metalic?
Discs and bi-metallics or fiber assemblies can be added to bring the measurement up to 3-5/8 in. maximum. Odd numbers of discs are OK. Place steel disc next to plate if required.

This information is for the early steering clutch pacs using the 3B---- drum and plate. I do not have equivelent info for the later 2H---- drum and plate.
The early nominal pac maximum thickness is 3-7/16 in. I would assume the later system would be similar.
