PV 15 Ensign carburetor question.

These carburetors often have slight differences in the top cover. This one has a flat brass ring that rests in the larger collar of the top cover. You can see that it was peened to stay. The top covers I have seen do not have this second collar. The 2 holes in the ring line up with the 2 ports in the cover. It kinda looks like some kinda of baffle. No mention in my manual. Any thoughts on this piece? Thanks, G

I have seen in a ensign service letter where it said to leave this piece out when repairing ,It serves no purpose.

I wonder how Chriscokid is getting on with the Ensign carby project, I've got a few old aluminum pots and pans I can send him for making the rubbish pot metal!

That carb top is a low bowl design. Its shorter than the earlier design and requires a shorter metering body (center round piece). Most of these that I have seen were missing when I took those carbs apart. I am currently working with a pattern maker to be able to make these carb tops as cast reproductions.

I am doing the same, Maybe we just need to work together then we would not have to both spend the full amount.
I have found out some very good news that will help the both of us.
Call me or send me an email and we will talk it over.

If you two good fellows can come up with a replacement for these old carbs, all I can say is that may the sun always shine on you.The carbs have to be the biggest PIA to contend with on these old tractors. You no sooner think you have it running great and then the carb takes a crapper.I'ld like to find a good newer replacement for all of my tractors.Keep us all advised on your profess.Thanks.

I think that the bigest problem with the lides on these carbetors is the basic orginal design that the steel tubing connects to the lid ,and the viberation transferred from the tank and lines to the lid cause the lid to crack or threads stripping in the lid which holds the needle valve and seat.
The threads were stripped in the lid on my 15 ,and I solved the problem by chucking the lid in my lathe drilling out the top and tapping it to take the 9/16 NF thread of a Cat transmission test adapter .In turn I drilled out the test adapter to take a farmall ABC seat ,and needle valve which works on the orginal float .I also used rubber tubing from the supply valve under thhe tank to the carburetor to cut the vibration to the lid
This was done approximatly 10 years ago and the engine runs smooth
I would recommend that that any member with a 10 or 15 adapt a flexable hose to the carburetor to cut the viberation and stress to the lid

Just the weight alone of the bronze fuel strainer was enough to crack those pot metal top covers. I solid mounted my strainer to take the load off and eliminate that risk.
