A few questions for the board, re my new (to me) D2 5U thank you -
1. What year was serial no. 5996 rolled out of the factory?
2. What size is the internal-drive hex plug for the main engine sump drain?
3. What brand & number of sparkplug would you recommend for the pony motor (ones that are guaranteed to make it start first pull every time would be great...!)?
Thanks in advance for your invaluable help.

The drain plug is not a standard hex drive, it has a taper to it. There is a bolt head size that works (can't remember size) or Cat sells a 1/2 drive socket for that purpose.
Use the NGK A6 or AB6 plug.

Hello Adrian
Good to see you with a new Cat, the drain plug tool is one most people make themselves from a bolt or nut, I just welded a nut the right size to an old socket - but murphy was onto me and I eventually found that one of my drawbar pins was also a plug spanner (don't know why I didn't look at it before).
Where are you in NZ ??
Cheers - Foster

Hi Foster
Thanks for the advice - I don't have any drawbar pins, but did find a bolt of approximately the right size, so was able to get the plug off and back on again relatively easy.
I'm in the Manawatu. We spoke on the phone a couple of weeks ago, and you mentioned you were looking for a fuel pressure gauge. A friend here may have access to one, but I'll need to remind him again I think. Send me your email address if you like (to my address - raduncan@xtra...), & I'll let you know how I'm getting on with the gauge. Any luck finding a blade for yours yet?
Cheers.
Adrian

I don't worry about a wrench for those plugs. I just snap a pair of vice grips on. One jaw in the hex and one jaw on the ouside and hit it with the palm of my hand. If they have been too tight too long it might take a wrench the first time.
