How do you remove the drain plug? I have the CAT hex tool but is seems like the hex part is too short to reach thorugh the belly pan. What am I missing? My D2 is a 5U1685. Thanks for any advise

Hi, Loren,

You can make up a plug puller with an old broken socket and a bolt for the size you need with a short or long extension. What, ever is needed

I didn't even weld up an old socket--just got a bolt to fit and welded a nut on--then used a socket and extension.

I just took a long bolt that fit the plug and welded a piece of bar stock onto the threaded end for a handle.

if your really in a pinch, find a bolt with the right size head and length you need, then use a pipe wrench to turn it. I.m pretty sure a standard 3/4 inch bolt has a 1 1/8th head on it and this is the size you will need.

Buy a new plug then you can use a 3/4' extension and dont have to screw around with the bolt and it slipping out of the plug.

I made mine by welding a length of 3/4 pipe to a spare lug nut off my old Dodge dually

Where's the paperclip and gum wrapper solution? We've got some McGuyvers on board here.

Seriously, those are some good tips! I'll need to fire up my welder and get to that "special tool" project just after I finish my MIG cart build.

I found this in one of my D2's tool boxes. It has the word "Truth" stamped in it and on the hex socket(?) the number 569 is cast in. Is this a Caterpillar part?

Sorry but the upload photos seems to not be working.

Ken,
I’m going out on a limb here with saw in hand, without seen the photo and not knowing the SN of the tractor in question. I think the number you are referring to is a casting number. The parts number for a drain wrench for the D2 (5J1864 to 5J3500) is 1B5175.
