Hi Mick,
I can't help you with an electric start, but if you are going to scrap the pilot motor, depending on your location, I'd like to know more about it.

Try Tillys in Qld, they did a cheaper conversion where they didn't change the ring gear. depending on how cold it gets where you are, you willalso need to consider changing pre combustion chambers to fit glow plugs etc.

For what it's worth, I have an early D8R with standard pony motor set up. I also have a D82U with pony that has its own 6V. elect start. Elect start gets the pony running without having to hand crank. Pony sure is handy to turn main eng. when cold outside and needs to turn over for a while or when you have a fuel or injector (or some other) problem and need to turn main eng. for a while, or when main eng. has sat for years so all oil is in pan, not in eng. so needs to turn over for a long while before building enough oil pressure. Personally I just love that elect start pony as the best option.
