The Caterpillar 2 TON was one of the original tractors in the Caterpillar lineup when the company was formed in 1925. The others being the model THIRTY and the model SIXTY from the Best line and the 5 TON and 10 TON models from the Holt line. The 2 TON came from the HOLT stable and was the same tractor as the Holt T35. The Holt T35 was introduced in 1921 and serial numbers 25003 to 26313 were made in California with serial numbers 70001 onwards made in Peoria. In many ways the 2 TON was way ahead of its time, having an overhead camshaft engine as well as having oil cooled steering. This was the last tractor to have the track shoes integrally cast with the rails.
It is also interesting to note that the gearbox is located behind the crown wheel at the rear of the machine instead of between the flywheel clutch and the crown wheel.
The picture below is of a Caterpillar 2 TON to which has been added an early HOLT T35 radiator.
The Holt T35 had riveted track frames rather than the cast ones used on the Caterpillar 2 TON.
