The Cat parts book has a lot of different generators. Most are 6V, I am not sure there is a 12V but yes a 24V for the direct electric start.
The reason for more than one mount is if it uses a idler gear to reverse the direction. I am not sure if that configuration is out there for the 318 engine but probably.
In the old days it was common to gut a 6V generator and have a bit of shaft exposed to add a pulley at the rear and power a alternator. The pony starter seems to handle 12V O'k, and 12v lights are so much more common.
Today there are mounts you can buy that direct drive alternators. My experience is the drive gear is hard to find and expensive when you do.

They made two configurations ,a high speed and low speed. I intend to use to turn an alternator, which isn't restricted to turn a certain direction, must need old generator with gear to fit my configuration whish has an idler gear in housing that bolts to main engine Cat 318
