Am i correct in believing ,that Cat made two different generator configurations on the D6 9u tractors, a high and low speed? Perhaps 6 and 24 volts? And the housing that bolts to the 318 engine are different for the different generators???? Any HELP. Thank you

The Cat parts book has a lot of different generators. Most are 6V, I am not sure there is a 12V but yes a 24V for the direct electric start.

The reason for more than one mount is if it uses a idler gear to reverse the direction. I am not sure if that configuration is out there for the 318 engine but probably.

In the old days it was common to gut a 6V generator and have a bit of shaft exposed to add a pulley at the rear and power a alternator. The pony starter seems to handle 12V O'k, and 12v lights are so much more common.

Today there are mounts you can buy that direct drive alternators. My experience is the drive gear is hard to find and expensive when you do.

Hi Team,
have not looked into the reason for different Generator drive ratios, but, logic tells me that there would be a need to have a generator run at an optimum speed for charging outputs.
I can see the need on stationary engines that are running at reduced RPM's to up the generator speed to maintain a required output.
I stand to be corrected.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

They made two configurations ,a high speed and low speed. I intend to use to turn an alternator, which isn't restricted to turn a certain direction, must need old generator with gear to fit my configuration whish has an idler gear in housing that bolts to main engine Cat 318

How much would you have to have for it? Shipping cost? The d6 it came from is a 9u with the idler gear in housing?

I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
