According to my parts book the 4G used regular hex head cap screw #S-1584 which is a 1/2 in. x 20 tpi x 1-3/4 in. length.
The nuts are a #1B4432 high head fine thread.
The washers a #3B4508

This is all common hardware, available in grade 8 (150,000 psi).
Available from outfits like McMaster or MSC.

Apparently they didn't use the fancy head version and 160,000 psi strength they use now.

When I did my D8 14A, Our local Cat shop "NC Machinery" sold me the correct pad bolts for about half of what anyone else could do. Unless your RD 4 pad polts are no longer stocked by your local Cat Dealer, I wouldn't shop for pad bolts anywhere else.

Hard to beat "CAT" bolts at any price.

The Cat bolts will probably have the slightly higher heads and hopefully known quality control. Can't say that I use them except is some critical applications. If your concerned you might try moving to a commercial grade 9 (180,000 psi) which also has the taller head.

Nik,

Are you looking for a pad also?
"Am short one pad, would buy good one. She will not be used daily."
What width and length?

As far as the bolts, I was under the impression that not only do they have a taller head but are shouldered where they go through the pad and the rail?

NIK O. I would buy a track bolt only, from Caterpillar if possible. I once saw someone put grade 8 bolts in instead and the bolt heads started to seperate from the bolt shaft, I could see the top of the head caving in. At that point I realized that Caterpillar made track bolts with the very tall and rounded bolt head for a GOOD REASON. This happened on the master link of a D7G track but after seeing the results I still will not cut corners on any track bolts. W. SMITH

On a couple of other brand crawler pages there has been a lot of discussion about pad bolts. Seems most of the problems guys are having is with "box" store bolts. Some are claiming that the bolts are not up to thier ratings.....I.E.....grade 8 really equals grade 5. I know our local "bolt" store carries stuff that comes from China. Prices are good but if they don't hold.......

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
