Those are in your parts book. I was thinking that they were an optional piece? I took from off with the radiator guard for paint (which isn't done YET!). If the "Honey Do" list isn't too big I'll sneak off to photo them with a couple of measurements.
I don't believe those side plates were an option, as far as I know they were part of the critter originally. If you're in brush, they'll help keep stuff like branches and such out of the engine compartment and if you're ever unlucky enough to toss a right hand track to the inside they just might save an oil filter.
Farmer3 and I discussed the same thing, also it seems to be a lot of motor hanging out there held up by bell housing bolts and the skid pan. I'm not in a real hurry for this I've put her to bed for the winter unless we get the log truck stuck on the lawn again & I have to take her out. When I get the truck done thats in my shop now I'll move her in, tear her apart & do the right clutch and paint her.
Man I know about that Honey-do list, keeping that list current allows me to do my own "stuff", Tractors, trucks & hunting season in two weeks. I'd like to get one with the handgun, I got one Tuesday with the Impala ( $2500 worth) and I didn't get the deer

Just to be clear, the side panels do not provide support to the motor in any way. The radiator and hydraulic pump are supported by the motor. It is cantilevered off the bell housing, but it is also supported by the leaf spring that rests in the pocket of the oil pan and is seated on the inner track frames. Check to make sure the pins are in place that attach the springs to the motor. Bad things happen when they are not there.
I made sure that the spring was correct when I put it back together after installing new piston rings, The old farmer I got the machine from had some homemade sheet metal side panels to cover the engine I think probably he took off the plates so he could bolt the side panels on. If its not a structural issue I won't worry about it. Actually the skid pan with hook offers some structural support itself..

On D2 3J and 5J tractors, the covers were made either one piece or two piece. On "U" series tractors they were different from the "J" series.
