Transmission/Bevel gear on my D6 9U

I've pretty well looked this thing over....from top, sides, front, rear. And finally getting familiar with what things look like, or should look like, or find after reading my manuals, or read stuff here on forum you guys talk about.

But after today I'm convinced that I should flip this 9u upside-down for a few days, crawl & scramble round on it looking for "new things" I've missed....just sit on the underside in the hot sun, with my manuals.....

Today I was draining my transmission & bevel gear compartment & found the "other" drain plug that must be for bevel gear....the one hiding above drawbar....the one I had never seen before.😊😮
I drained tran. & let set for about an hour, then drained bevel gear compartment. As much ran out of bevel gear as what ran out tran.....so now I wondering at what point they share & equalize???

The dipstick has shown to be full, yet I collected from both in a washtub, a #2 I suppose, nearly a full washtub full. I need to measure, but it seems to be lots more in there than I thought should be for 40 plus qts.....

If I read my operators manual correct the oil is shared & equalizes between both. And there is only one fill spot that fills both?? And one dipstick that reads for both?
Do they equalize at any depth/level lubricant or does they both have to be near full to "run over" to equalize.
My book shows capacity of 42 qt or so for tran.
Under "Washing Tran. Compartments" as I read it, it says to fill back up with 42 qt of wash stuff...kerosene or whatever solvent, then drive round flushing etc...
Anyway, this got me wondering....

I just want to make sure I read the book & do things correctly. Hate to fill tran, then find bevel gear is dry😮

And if by chance some of you drive by somewhere & see some goofball sitting on top of an upside dozer....sitting there in the hot sun with several books....please be gentle! OK??

PS: a #2 washtub is size we all took baths in when I was a kid....all of us bathed in same water.....then mom washed cloths, then the dishes.....

from memory the oil level seperation between the two compartments is fairly high so as to stop excessive oil transfer between both compartments when travelling up or down steep slopes--makes sure a safe level of oil remains in each compartment at all times.
You will note that the oil is filled into the trans. case and the level is measured in the bevel gear --rear case--compartment ensuring that the oil has spilled over into the rear case after the trans. is filled first.
I would have thought though that the oil level on the Dip Stick in the rear would have gone down to about the low mark or a little lower after draining the Trans., may be some one else can help further here.

There is a 1 in. dia. x 3-1/2 long horizontal baffle tube about 6 in. up off the floor of the bevel gear case that connects the two compartments. The bevel gear case floor is also lower than the transmission bottom. The only way to drain is out the bevel gear case plug as it would retain a considerable amount of oil.

It makes sense now. Fill tube in the tran. & dipstick in Bevel compartment. And the baffle tube up off floor. Makes more sense now when I look at my book.
I got them both drained & flushed. Finally refilled OK yesterday.
They were both sludged up some, and both magnets had some really fine metal shavings, but nothing I deemed to be bad.

The finals weren't near so sludged up. I refilled them other day & drove round checking sounds etc....everything felt & sounded same as before.

I haven't run it round since refilling tran & bevel yet, and was hoping things will sound different, or better. This thing has had a forward low speed kind'a roar, grinding sound.....sorta like say, an early '50 model truck with straight cut gears....as it just takes off in lower gears.
This sound is in forward gears only.
Really it's not bad, but I'd rather hear less of it & hope things will be quieter when I get round to test drive it some.
