G'Day Gents,

Following the advice of several members, I have decided to start swimming lessons for my RD4. :bathbaby: I thought it would be best if I started with shallow water and teach it to paddle it's tracks first.... I wouldn't want to get it scared of the water after all..... 😖mile:

But, rather than take the mountain to mohumud, I took mohumad to the mountain.

The added bonus is that the tracks will hopefully loosen up, as I will remove the baths tomorrow morning and then drag it forward again. If necessary, I will repeat the process further along the chain. Water breaks down the molecular chains that forms the rust. I also made sure that the pins were not fully submerged. If you fully submerge the pins the trapped air in the gap between the pin and hole, will not readily come out.

Cheers,

Phill.

Hope the swimming lessons free them up but it may take a long time. My neighbor had an old D46u that he ended up taking off the chains and taking them to a track shop and it took heat and a good press to get the rails apart. Part of the problem was that the chains were relatively new and the pins had a good fit in the bushing making it hard to get apart after they had rusted together for about 15 years.
Anyway,
Best of luck.

G'Day Jim,

I have only a couple of "stuck" joints. The rest all move. Perhaps not a s freely as i would like, but the do move. I am out to get those stuck ones. Hopefully they will free up. If not, I haven't lost anything except a bit of my time.

Cheers,

Ah, come on Dan - take that as a challenge! Little bit of attention and that 8U will be rolling along like it's new : )

G'Day Gents,

Well..... It's finally happened. I got the bloody thing into the shed, where I wanted it. (I was going to call it a him one moment and a her the next.... seems wierd. It must be a him. 😖mile: ) And without any help from the kids......

It's funny it rolled much much easier forwards than it did backwards. And I did notice that there were a couple of joints in the track chain that wouldn't move. No doubt it will all get sorted before I paint HIM. I am thinking of pulling them of and acid bathing them. I just have to try to find the master link and get the wretched thing out.....

Now I need to source some good primer and original colour paint. And some decals. Wouldn't it be easier to just cut the letters out of a piece of paper (as a stencil) and use a can of spray paint?

What is the original colour code? How many litres do I need for a full respray (plus some left over for touch up if I can be bothered)? I will want it looking good when I make it work. Scatches from being used, are OK.

I saw an ad' for seats somewhere. But I have the original seats, but they are missing the covers. All the springs are there. Hopefully, my fellow West Aussies can tell me whether it's cheaper to get the new ones from the US, or if there is a local upholsterer that can do it right.

Cheers,

Phill.

Good to hear you're making some progress there, Phill. I trust that after the swimming lessons your RD4 rolled a bit smoother than this guy's Cat.....

G'Day Gents,

Sasquatch - I think my tracks go around a little better than that blokes D2 (?). Well.... I'd like to think so.... But I am not so sure..... Once they have been acid or molasis bathed, they will be fine. 😊 I wonder if I should pant them too. The chain side that is..... 😖mile: It would be just to hard to keep the scratches out of the other side. 😖mile:

Out of our 3 options for rust removal, electrolysis is not really a viable method in this case due to not being able to ensure a good enough circuit is available. Citric acid may be the fastest way to go, plus once the tracks are removed there is no need for washing as once it's dry it is inert. The added bonus for using the molasis is that the left over liquid can be sprayed onto your veggies and it will kill slugs and snails. 🤘 (It's the iron chelate that kills them but is harmless to everything else)
The hard part as I see it, is getting the master pin out. I think it may be a job for the bright blue spanner. 😖mile:

Cheers,

Phill.
