I was running my 212 9T441 grader in the shop today, (D311 engine) after shutting it down, I went to open the compression release for the next time. It seems it is stuck in the run position. I pulled the valve cover off, everything appears to be as it should, yet, it still will not shift to release. Looking through the manuals, I can see how to remove and replace the linkage and rod under the valve cover, but I don't want to go that far if not needed. I also do not want to use too much force as I tend to break things. Could I have "over extended" the linkage into the run position?

What might I be missing.

That was the exact problem; somehow the cam and shaft had rotated beyond the normal location and slipped towards the radiator end. I suspect that the shaft had slipped over the years. The cam was still engaging it’s keyway, but not completely. It took about an hour last night looking and thinking, but this morning it all went back together in about two hours.

All is well now, thanks for the advice.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
