Hey all,

I have a d6 9u. I am familiar with startup on this old dozer, but I had something happen the other day thats puzzling. Went to start the main, pony was running, normal start procedures, when I engaged the starter clutch, it stalls out my pony. Last time I did something stupid, I had to pull the starter assembly and replace the big bearing on the starter assembly, I also cleaned and inspected all the other parts. It been working for the last year, 3 or 4 times of use per year. The other day was the first start since about October, but it was working fine prior. Is it possible the bearing is shot again? Really hate to have to pull the ol pony again, and yes I can unlatch the pinion and all that good stuff. Thanks in advance

When the pony is running the shaft and big bearing are spinning. If the pinion engages the flywheel but bogs the pony I suspect there is a problem with flywheel/pinion gear teeth.

Roll over the main engine to a new spot on the flywheel and try again. Main engine tend to stop in the same location when shut down.

To be clear, did you confirm that with the pinion unlatched, you can engage the clutch and the pony runs ok?

Ya, I got the pinion unlatched, pony runs great, but if I engage the clutch at anytime it stalls out hard and dies, I did roll the main over to a new spot as well thinking along those lines, but no change. Im in the process of pulling the pony again

Better to find out before something else goes haywire. Should I be able to turn the clutch over/center mechanism by hand when I open the inspection cover? Because right now it will not rotate

Ok, so even with the pinion not engaged, if you try the pony clutch, it dies? If so, then the problem is in the pony "transmission", since the pinion should be able to spin freely when not engaged with the main engine flywheel. When not engaged with the flywheel, and with the pony clutch disengaged, the pinion assembly should be able to turn since it's not "connected" to anything in that state.

Thats correct, it will die regardless of the pinion latch position.

I'd be looking into the pony clutch. Could be damaged discs or worn out allowing eccentric disc rotation possibly rubbing/hiting the clutch housing.

That would explain why the pony can run with the clutch disengaged but not when engaged with the discs clamped together but not concentric.

Thanks all,

Im gonna pull the whole assembly out and check it out, probably easier than trying to work on it in frame. Wish I would've parked it on top of the hill not in a low spot😁

I can get the SN layer today.

Its a 1951, converted to hyd blade, straight blade. Has a good canopy, and winch. It was logged with here in the PNW for some time. Then got retired to farm work, clearing orchards and such. Its in Lebanon Oregon . One final needs work, but its functional still. I was gonna ask $5000, or best offer. High enough to keep the scrap guys from buying it😆
