it looks like old magnet, ozdozer, bruce and others are correct and i am the
one wrong. all the information i find in manuals refer to white smoke as being
a problem with fuel or water. i do not agree with this but it appears to be the
industry standard which i cannot argue!

i have talked to several mechanics who apply this for a living and they tell me
white smoke is water. three of them i work with, the one answered my
question with a question, is it possible to make white smoke? my thoughts
exactly. what i was looking for is a partially combusted hydrocarbon as viewed
through the spectrum of light, compared to H2O viewed through the spectrum
of light. this is all irrelevant though, for the sake of conversation here on the
board one needs to follow the industry standard.

i must apologize, i was thinking way to scientific and not practical.

Apology accepted😊 😊 I like your chart.

If you had asked for an explanation it would have been more productive.

Again I think the symptoms are more orientated towards the older pre-com ignition engines where combustion is initiated in the chamber and is expelled through that little hole into the main cylinder where if conditions aren't right the combustion products can be quenched/condensed and exhausted as the white smoke. (non-technical explanation😊 😊 )

u-joint - It take a man to apologise gracefully when he realises he's been wrong, and your apology is unreservedly accepted. I do like your chart, it says it all in a nutshell, and it's simple to follow .. 😊

hello u-joint,thank you ,but like you said ,it does take more looking for faults/facts to find some causes ,we being all over the world we don't get to see the machine that people ask question about .so posting all the info that people see ,hear ,test done helps to make helping them easier. serial number being the one some forget to post😮 ,bruce oz

White smoke can be unburned fuel, try starting an engine with the air inlet blocked, or let the timing go completely off and see what comes out of the exhaust.
Truth is, you need to look at the smoke plus other symptoms decide what it is likely to be and then investigate what is causing it. One mans white can be anothers grey.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
