I am not sure this is the proper way. I had the same thing happen with my D42T shortly after I purchased it due to poor methodology on the procedure.
I ended up pull starting it to engage the main and the pinion disengaged once the RPM got to the release point...I am pretty sure that is the least desirable method.
On my 2T there is a tiny tiny tiny hole in the cover. Supposedly one can reach the latches on the sleeve and release it manually. If you have a parts manual, that will likely be a big help so you can see what you are looking for. That is for my 1945 2T...

I went and looked at an RD4 I have sitting in the yard. There is a decent size access cover over the starter pinion. You will need to remove the front floor plate to get to it. You may need to turn the pony to position the latches so you can get at them. They are geared together so if you can pry or tap on one to release it the pinion should pop back out of gear.

If the clutch on the starting engine is released then there is no worries as it will kick out on it,s own the same as if the starting engine was running and the diesel starts and it kicks out. Again make sure the clutch is released if you go this route so the starting engine doesn,t turn.
SJ-That is good to know.
THANKS, bernie/8C 361/SJ for the info. I will check for the cover plate and try that. Thanks again

Sometimes when the pinion is latched in the clutch drags a bit making it hard to start the pony. This is probably your reason for wanting to kick it out.
8C 361, TOM. I have the floor boards up, (pulled them when I removed the pony motor and have not reinstalled them yet) I called myself "looking" to see if there might be a access panel and don't remember seeing one. Would it be posiable to post a picture of the one you have? Thank you Lou Ray
Sorry it took so long to get this here, This RD4 is 4G 5546 so it might be different. It is definately different than the 7U pinion access. I was in a hurry when I snapped the picture. I should open it up and take another shot. I cant tell if there is another bolt behind the dash or not. It is right over the pinion so it should allow good access.![]()
By my 4G1-4G9999 parts book that little two bolt cover did not show up until 4G9401. Guess that explains why I have seen some hacked up holes in the covers😊 😊
