rustyfender post=238081 userid=5630I am sure I am not the only one having carbourator issues with a D7 17A phoney carbourator, I have had it apart several times, it’s dirty and crappy inside, tried to clean but. It seems to be worse not better, It is still in use but takes a lot of my time and patience getting engine started only runs with choke completely on and then hardly gets enough fuel to go. Is there any replacement carbourators out there? I believe it is a Zenith no numbers anywhere I can see.
OK easy fix, if it dose not run without choke is a good sign the low speed circuit is plugged. The Zenith carb has a brass tag riveted on the top of the carb. 5F3525
a good sonic bath and scrubbing with carb brushes and carb clean should do the trick.
Check float, nettle and seat with fresh eyes ... like you never been there before.
New Fuel?
Are the gas tank or lines getting vapor locked? Mine dose that all the time, to check that I blow air into the gas tank from the gas fill inlet,my gas cap has a small hole in the top.

Fat Dan's assessment is correct. If it will run "ok" with choke, then you're not starving for fuel from the tank or bowl etc. As he wrote, your idle and possibly main circuits and/or the passages that feed them are not clear. I'm not familiar with the carb on your machine but I've done a couple of D2 carbs and the drill is to clean every passage and orifice, and then check that the carb is correctly assembled, meaning all parts including gaskets in place and in good shape, and correctly oriented. Example: on my 3J carb, the passage under the bowl supplying gas to the main, compensating, and idle circuits was choked, not completely, but enough to prevent full power. Once that was cleaned, it ran with full power but would not idle. I discovered that the idle "jet", which is just a brass plug with a notch in it, was put in the wrong way up. This meant that when the throttle plate was closed at idle, the notch was on the outside, and thus not subject to vacuum and thus not passing idle fuel. Simple fix; reinstall it with the notch down. Pony now starts first/second pull at idle, and will run without choke within seconds, at idle. So, examine your carb and look to solve each problem you can identify. No power? Not enough fuel getting to the main atomizers. No idle? Idle circuit blocked.
I will say although things like sonic cleaners are good, the only "guaranteed" way to verify that the unit is clean is to disassemble it and visually inspect, including driving out lead and brass plugs for access to all passages
