I worked with a older crane operator back in the 70's that constantly spoke of his brothers and his bat dung mining operation in Cuba in the late 50's and early 60's. They mined and packaged bat poop and exported it for fertilizer. He said when the missle crisis happened they blasted the entrance to the bat caves shut and barely got out of the country. Lost everything. He dreamed of going back and starting it up again when things cooled down. He mentioned cat loaders and crawlers that were left in the mine that were near new when they left. I wish I had asked many more questions but I was to young and dumb. He is long gone now but someday someone is going to find a yellow pile of gold if they have not already.

David,

Those were outstanding pictures of highway work done in the '20s. I saw machinery that I had not seen pictures of before. I loved the hugh press for breaking concrete cylinders and how big it was compared to what we use today. Also the 10-wheel dump with the right front tire almost completely gone. Would you say that truck made a lot of right hand turns but the tandems wanted to keep on going straight?

Many thanks for posting! - Jan

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
