Free end of cable goes in narrow end of slot heading downward and out the wide end of the slot.
Loops around wedge
Goes back past wedge into wide end of slot and out the narrow end again
Cinch down cable and drive wedge into slot
This is from memory, what am I missing?

ccjersy,
I agree with what you say except on my tractor the narrow end of the slot points up when looking through the access hole--per manuel the cable wraps around the drum from the bottom and comes up to the slot --if I put it in the slot it is the wide part of the slot and not the narrow end as you said. This is why I am thinking some one put these drums back in on the wrong side.
I am thinking of making a temporary slot just to get by for a couple of weeks. Have you any brain storms? Thanks, Lex
Old Magnet,
Mine is upside down! But it does look like what you have. I didn't like the sound of bearing bores etc when welding. I believe if I have to take the unit down to weld on it I might as well switch the drums to their correct side. What kind of estimate would you give to change two drums? And do you have a short term fix. i.e. tie a knot in the end of the cable. braze a piece of metal on the end of the cable??
Thanks, Lex

Hi, Priceless.
'Twould appear that somebody has done gone and put the drums on bass ackwards, i.e., on the wrong sides. I may be thinking only 'inside the box' but I can't see any way around the problem without swapping the drums back to the proper sides.
From memory, I think it would be impossible to install the clutch and brake actuating levers on the opposite sides but I think pretty much everything else would swap over, drums, brake bands, springs, pins, links, etc..
Dunno whether it is true or not but I once was told that a Cat field mechanic had installed a new turbo on a 270 HP D8H with the intake and the exhaust bass ackwards using only the normal parts. Now THAT would be 'inventive'.
Just my 0.02.
Just a thought that it might be worth checking the drum rotation direction, as it is possible to also fit the the drum shaft drive 180 deg' out. tctractors
I listened to your advice today broke down today and tore apart both sides of the CCU I am betting this will be quicker then engineering a "quick fix" that isn't really a fix. --the right side came apart with minor difficulty and the left side was a fight the whole way. Someone in the past had cut both drum bearing off the shaft and cut into the shaft also. I need to do some file work before putting the bearings back in. The seals and bearings look very good, almost new.
Question---I see the hardest part as putting the drum back in and keeping it level while I put the bearings in. Any advice on this?
Thanks, Lex

Hi, Priceless.
A couple of small wedges of wood strategically placed between the rim of the drum and the bottom of the case should help with that.

I would like to put a speedie sleeve for the seal the fits on the cable drum. The sealing surface for this seal is on the hub that is bolted to the case. I don't have any tool to measure this hub, can anyone tell me the diameter of the hub? Thanks
