I was going to ask here if anyone had figured out a good way to mount a 3 1/8" or 2 3/4" pony motor to an engine stand. There are just no good options to clamp on either end of the block if you want to completely dress the engine. They are so darn heavy, I just don't want to try to wrestle them around on a bench or on the floor. To me, mounting off the bottom base is the only good option.

So, I went down to my local discount steel house and went looking for tubing. I wanted to work with 2 x 2 but they had a bunch of 11 ga 2 x 3" so I went with that. I bought a 3/8" plate for a base and started cutting and welding. I made the holes for the D6 pony but will mount the little one there too. I'm planning on putting a spacer plate and sandwich the gasket so I can start and run them on the fixture too. I might need to make a garden hose connection at the bottom. I thought that the D6 size flywheel was above the mounting feet, but the appear to be just flush. I need to add the final cross pieces at the back to bolt on my engine stand bracket. I suppose Cat yellow would be a good color for the fixture.

Eddie, what did the dealers use when rebuilding these things? They must weigh 300 lbs fully dressed- maybe more?

I have 5 crankshafts out for grinding, so I will be putting it to good use! My friend that needs these just bought another D2 (5U) so I need to try to keep up with him.....

Nice mount but I dont know what you gained, I like to be able to turn the engine around to work on the bottom, sides and top. All I have ever done was used the work bench and the shop crane and blocks of wood for rebuilds. i would bolt the engine to a wood pallet for test run with a garden hose....WA7OPY

I just made up an adapter to mount the pony to a conventional, heavy duty engine stand. Allows rotation of the engine for access.

I wasn’t clear. This adapter is mounting to a harbor freight heavy duty engine stand. The pic has a 4 cyl Onan diesel I did recently. I absolutely want to rotate it.

Hi Team,
we had a bench with a cut out slot for the drive gear to slot into and few holes drilled to suit the base flange hold down holes secure each horizontal size pony to the work bench.

Verticals had an adaptor plate or two that suited most of them that bolted to the bench, also a few lift brackets too, otherwise we wrestled them around the bench--benches had a small swinging arm crane to do the heavy lifting.

Scan below---we also had this test/run bench that ended up in the dumper after ponies supposedly stopped coming in for repair--strange how we still needed them after that went--we then wrestled them around any handy work bench--do not get me started on new Bosses that know everything.
In the foreground of the bench top you can see bases for the two sizes of horizontals.

Cheers,
Eddie B.

Eddie,

THANK YOU for posting the picture of the test stand. I don't know how you are able to put your hands on this stuff, but it sure is interesting.

It would be nice to be able to mesh the gear to a pump or generator so you could load it down and make sure that the carb settings were right and get the rings seated before installing on a machine.

Hi Greg,
most times I did pony rebuilds as an Apprentice they were for Parts Exchange short motors. So we did not have manifolds etc. to be able to run them.
Later on, time was money so the ponies for clients were overhauled and test run back on the machines.
All passed the test--lol.

I have some old literature I saved when ever I saw it in trash cans at The Dealer--often got chewed out for wasting time looking in bins--all these years later it can come in handy.
Later on even up to near when I Retired friends, Instructors and Engineers at Cat saved outdated stuff for me--not what but who I guess.
Have no late model stuff though as i was asked to leave my Cat School books etc. at The Dealer when I retired--since binned I believe--bah humbug.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

I suspect there is some packrat in about all of us that come here regularly. But then there are special people like Edb and OM that have information that must be organized as they can find. So a special thank you to all of you that take time post this information.

Organization just doesn't happen at my place.

Now it's on the stand. Seeing the test stand that Eddie posted, I may look at adding a cooling tank so I can eventually run them up on the stand

well i made two different still one for one a engine stand witch was just angle iron and the second one was just feet drilled and taped to keep it up off the table so the gearing would clear and help hold a blank bottom plate for oil and water so i could test run it on my work bench.
