Hi all,
I have 3 nos liners for my 13A which have a copper seal under the top flange. I have just bought 3 more which have the later style rubber seal which goes around the side ( not under the flange). Just looking for some advice regarding liner heights, I think it would be ok if I put all three of the same liners under the same head but just not sure. Maybe I should try and get three more copper seals for the new liners to make them all the same.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Hutchy

Hi Mark,
best to keep the liner sets under one head but not vital.
The liner flange thickness should be the same on both the old and new style liners.
As for the bands I think it does not matter if you use them or not as maybe the block lower counter bore is possibly not deep enough to fully cover the bands.
I think I would stick with copper liner seals on all in this low horsepower application--likely only available after market-- as I would guess that Cat supersedes them to steel assuming for higher HP applications.
I stand to be corrected.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Thanks Ed,
Your right about the lower counter bore surface area, very limited on the older blocks. The copper rings are all superseded to steel now so I’ve ordered 6 steel ones. The pistons are different to, they measure the same so compression should be the same but one lot have 3 rings and the others have 4. I’m just about over it now I don’t think it will matter as long as the compression is the same. If it plays on my mind to much I might give you a call.
Thanks again
Mark

Also on another note, I’d like to post a positive encounter with my local dealer, William Adams. We are quick to belt the dealers around when it comes to ordering older parts, and I know I’m lucky to have a good relationship with my branch but today I asked a few questions about these liner seals and admittedly I had the part no to start but my guy identified a service mag dated 1963 related to the part no. And then called me back 10 mins later after he’d located the hard copy and e-mailed me a copy of it. He also identified a product bulletin but could not locate it. Just goes to show the info is there if you know how to find it. Gave me some hope we might not be on our own it this game.

Just a good news story for the day

Hi Mark,
scans below show blurrily liner shims available back in the day in varying thicknesses for better sealing.
It is best not to stack thin shims as they tend to be squishy and so move and fret eventually coming apart.
Also even though other scan is for a 3306 the liner protrusion specs are the same --all liners under one head need to be as close as possible to each other within the spec. range, other head liners can be different overall height but need to follow the same variation spec. between the 3 liners, if you get my drift.
Cheers,
Eddie B.
