Hello peeps. I have a 1949 5U D2. I bought it this last summer and have used it for only a few hours before bringing it inside for some much needed maintenance. I need new rollers for the tracks and looks like I'm gonna be running the D3 rollers. I'm not a stickler for original. I have bought all new fluids for this machine, so got that covered. I really need a good book for this thing. I have a couple of the original books but they seem limited on general maintenance stuff. Also I'm trying to figure out how to convert this thing to 12v. I know that I can tweak the generator and install a new voltage regulator but was wondering if there is a better way. Gen P/N looks like 1102425 9D18. Also I need a rebuild kit for the starter on the pony. Any suggestions where to find one?? P/N 1107024 9C25

I looked into D3 rollers for my 5U. Four double flange, four single flange, and two carriers came out to about $1k. Add an inch thick strip on the underside of the track frames to compensate for the smaller diameter rollers (2" smaller). Now if only there was some kind of brand new replacement for the idler...

Are you going to run lights? If only for starting use 12v battery not hooked to gen. It will start many times before needing an overnight charge. Even a set of jumpers hooked up while it warms up will more than maintain the battery. The starter should be just a regular delco rebuild kit as far as brushes and bushings. It will run on 12v for many years as long as you don't do any extended cranks.

There are a couple of older threads on how to convert a CAT to a 12 volt alternator.
Use the SEARCH function in the upper right hand of your screen.

Hi Jerk,

Welcome to the club. I have heard from a couple sources that BERCO may produce reproduction undercarriage parts for D2's. I have not looked into it myself as the undercarriage on my 5U-D2 is far from needing replacement, but it may be worth getting a gold of your local BERCO dealer and finding out if they do in fact make it.

As mentioned if you go into the advanced search tab you can search key words on anything that has ever been posted on here. There are indeed a few on converting from 6V generator to a 12V system. For my D2 I plan to take the gear drive off the generator and have a coupler made to adapt it to a regular Delco alternator. Then convert the lights to a modern bright 12V bulb. There are a few options though.

As far as books go, your best bet is to watch Ebay and or swap meets where there are lots of tractor guys. I have a parts manual and a service manual for mine, but would like to also find the operation manual one day.

Hope that you are able to find the information that you need, there are lots of really smart folks in the club who will be able to help you through the challenges.
Be warned, now that you have one tractor - they almost always multiply!!!
Have fun and welcome again.
Nate

Looks like I didn't word my question properly. I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with rewiring their old 6v generator to produce 12v? Kinda like on a 6v VW Beetle. I've searched the archives and it seems that folks either send theirs out or convert to a 12v belt driven delco alternator. As for the starter I was just hoping someone knew the rebuild kit p/n or a reputable place to order it. Saving me from pulling mine apart and measuring the bushings. I just haven't had any luck finding a "rebuild kit" for the part number I have. And yes, I am running lights, digital gauges, and every other thing that would make a guy that cares about original equipment cringe. Heck, I'd like to have a usb port for charging my phone too.

I like the original look, but the USB port? I would go for a hidden one! I wonder that the standby batt drain would be.

lol, in that case you're already set with your original 6v system, USB outputs 5v.

I know some of my plans will drive the purists crazy. I'm a car guy and I'm the kind that respects bone stock but I'm incapable of leaving anything stock. My crawler has to work for me. That means moving snow at night. Now I know that an original D2 with those dim friggin 6v lights will work but not good enough for me. That being said I know that fabricobbling some brackets and installing a belt driven self exciting alternator would be reliable and easy but I just can't get past the fact that it totally looks like something that a farmer cobbled together in his barn. Not talking smack here. You should see my log splitter, it's a fine example of redneck ingenuity.

OK, You need to post a log splitter picture. You can't just tease us and not show the picture. I am more than a bit red in the neck area myself.

I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
