I have a 1955? Cat d4 7u/ht4 #31435, it was my fathers before mine, and his fathers before his. Anyways, I have a few questions. The right side steering brake pedal has tons of resistance when I press it, and does not get full travel, it seem like the brake shoes? are stuck, is there any way I can try to free these without having to do a teardown? Since this has the ht4 loader it has the surge? tank on top of the motor, how much hydraulic oil does that hold? and can I use iso 32 (10w) Hydro Oil? Where can I find a dipstick for the transmission oil, and any other ones? (other than engine) Thank you
Josh

Remove the @ 6"x 5" covers on the back of the transmission case and take steel bar and a hammer and tap on the top of the brake band linkage and they should free up or pop loose from the brake drum. Then check the pedal travel.

The linkage is up on top but you can tap on the band lining clamp or connector and free them up. If they are loose then the linkage may be froze up. Remove the cover under the seat to get to them.

my 7U has a plate underneath the seat, remove it and you can see the linkages and adjustment for the bands in there

yes the seat has to be removed--can't remember if there was a tool box under the seat also--don't know the amount of hydraulic oil, but the iso 32 should be fine for Maine's cooler climate

I found a plate under the seat that can be accessed without the seat being removed, is that the one? the plate seems to go to the wall of the fuel tank from the front.
Thank you

Yes just remove seat cushion, not seat frame.

there is also another plate below the floorboard that gives access to the brake linkage and the lower area of the adjuster

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
