Apologies to non Australians but I am at my wits end trying to find Highway yellow that I can hand paint.

Westrac told me they had a 4L so I bought it only to get it home and find out is was their current safety yellow. Oh the brightness !! Local industrial paint shops can sell me paint that I need a respirator to open the tin and can only be sprayed..

Westrac can get highway yellow but it has to come by ship ( being dangerous goods), and from Singapore. I am in Fremantle.

What can I paint my manifolds with ? Is there a flame proof highway yellow ?

Not sure why you would want to hand Paint a Tractor, you will never get a finish like spraying . Old Cat yellow I get from My paint supplier No Problem , If you can't then take a sample of what you have and get a Match .. Regards Using a Mask , definetely if spraying , Hand would be OK For myself. If adding a Hardener definetly use a Proper Mask , They are about $60 .Remember that you use different thinners for Enamels than undercoat.
For Manifolds I use a Charcoal High Temp Spray , in a Can made by White Night and available from Bunnings about $18-19 .and temp rating about 1500 *. Looks great and Last Well , Also if you are getting paint mixed get them to Put some into a presure Pack . just great for Touch up .My Two bobs worth , hope this Helps. LJ

I went through the same hoops for awhile here in Victoria with William Adams, the local Cat Dealer, after their Sales guy supplied me the wrong colour spray can too, though with my usual diplomacy, courtesy, and persistance, I think we got it sorted out😖mokin:

(1) They have the high temp. black exhaust paint in spray cans, from memory it was around $16 last year, it's called "Black Muffler Paint Aerosol". Part number 4C-4199

(2) William Adams also have spray cans of "Highway Yellow", they call it "Touch Up Paint" and the cans have a seperate hand applied sticker on them saying "Old Cat Yellow", the cans are also marked clearly with "William Adams". Part number 453-3870-C300. I think I paid about $12 each for them.

(3) Wattyl make the 4 litre cans of "Old Highway Yellow" for William Adams here in Oz, it's their "All Purpose Enamel" and is labelled as "Old Cat. Yellow", it costs about $65, though unlike the American supplied paint, it does need a Primer first.

The Caterpillar "One Safe Source" book lists their American sold enamel as not needing a primer coat first, it can be sprayed straight onto bare steel.

Mike

Thanks Lance and Mike,
I like the sound of this William Adams and will email them today. Westrac parts is its own city so I was not really surprised I got home with the wrong colour.

Last time I did paint my manifolds charcoal/black ? I felt it did not look so original and often found traces of yellow on them. Here is a sales brochure which I think another Victorian Bruce OZ once posted showing like an anodized finish. Old motorbike guys always told me to use sales brochures when restoring - and they taught me how to hand paint which I now find less messy. Also means I can do it bit by bit as I pull it down.

I work right next door to a Wattyl and they said no chance, so I will take this info in to them also and see if they can track it back.

I very much appreciate the advice

David

Good for detail work but ink fades and printed colors change. I spent years doing early auto restoration. We used to search for a spot of original paint where it was bolted to another part or covered by something like upholstery and trim, protected from daylight and air, then have it color-matched. It's a bit more simple with industrial equipment.

Hi Team,
here in Australia ,at The Dealer's, until about the late sixties when side covers were ordered for each new machine by Sales Dept.--anti-vandal protection--the exhaust manifolds were painted heat resistant silver, as they had been for years. It was deemed unnecessary after this point as the manifolds were hidden and did not need to pretty for a new machine delivery or after a rebuild.
Also I believe that exhaust temperatures were rising with increased output of the engines due to better designs and materials, this burnt off any heat resistant paints including the matt blacks we painted rebuilt turbo's etc.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Another supplier is Paint Supplies here in South Australia. They sell it for around $65 for 4litres. Made by Wattyl. There seems to be two soughts of old cat yellow kicking around between paint suppliers in Australia. There is a mustard one like Bruce is talking about or there is a brighter yellow which is the proper colour.

Cheers
Billy

Hi there
the paint Bruce is refering to is Watyl OLD CAT YELLOW 32321 160413.004
I also have a 4 litre that looks the right colour to me has 160417.004 and 160317.004 on the same tin. I am not too sure which numbers on a paint can indicate the correct tint.
Both of these tins of paint came from the same Cat dealership possibly a couple of years apart. Some of the paint used on newer machines looks terrible to me, my late father called it scoury calf yellow so enough said.
The only other thing I can say for sure is you will need a lot more than 4 litres to cover any size tractor to anything like origional paint thickness.
Have fun Wimmera Farmer

I have bought and used paint from www.Paintec.com.au - manufactured in Loganholme, Queensland and supplied to the Queensland Caterpillar agent, Hastings Deering.

Paint: 400QD Enamel 'Old Cat yellow'
Hardener: 400B
Thinner: T400

The colour looks 'yellow' and matches my memory of the original. I got a good result spraying with 10% hardener, 20% thinner, sprayed through a 1.7mm nozzle.

regards, Robert

Hi Robert, That's good info there, I'm no spray painter, how many top coats did you do?
