I have a d311 #7s7623 I am playing with, and hope to get running. Did cat make a adapter for a hand crank on the d311, if so any numbers would help. Thanks Steve S

There may have been a provision for a service crank, but I have never seen one. Look to that fitting as used on a D4400

I don't have my parts catalog to hand but I'm not recalling a hand crank for the D311 - its predecessor the D3400 had one

I dont believe the front crank on a 311 was meant for starting, only service work. I would fear the man that could hand crank start a 311

If there are any around, I guess it would be more likely to exist on a power unit because they would be less likely to have a 44 pump mounted on the radiator. On the earlier D4 & D4 tractors most of them have been removed to fit a hyd pump to the front.

On small (sometimes on older medium size) marine diesels there is often a hand crank setup but the ones I have seen crank on the cam shaft so the engine is turning twice the speed of the crank. Using a compression relief and cranking as hard as possible and turning the compression relief handle, and everything else is perfect, they will start. A Cat engine with a hand crank turning at the same speed as the engine (not double the speed) and a compression relief that is unreachable from the front, I doubt that it would ever work. I say this, but have never tried it with a Cat diesel so I am open to being proven wrong and learning something. Grant.

In general these engines must be turning about 200 RPM to even attempt to start. If slower the compression lost is too great to have the firing heat.
