Merry Christmas Everyone.
Like so many families, we have a plethora of ancient photos. The sad part is there only one copy of each, so who inherits the image?
Thanks to my gracious wife and her Photoshop skills, we have scanned and enhanced all these images to distribute to all the far flung family for Christmas.
Today I am posting the harvest photos of the Root family in the Paso Robles basin from the first year (1884) to the last harvest (2003)
We are missing a number of photos of my Father. He was a pioneer in the use of the self propelled hillside combines. In 1951 he bought a Harris 88. Next came a Massey Harris 90 in 1954 or 1955. What a disappointment that was. I guess they were a good level land machine but were not really satisfactory in the hills. Finally in 1959 he bought a John Deere 95H which served him well until the end of his farming career in 1974.
The following are my kin in the photos

1. George Frances Root, 1861 to 1952. My great grandfather He arrived in Paso Robles in 1884 from Vermont. He took the train to San Francisco and then on the train south to Salinas where rail service ended. Then it was a walk for the last 90 miles

2. Glen Stanton Root, 1890 to 1979. My grandfather. A Paso Robles Native.

3. Glen Eldon Root, 1924 to 2003

4. Charles Eldon “Casey” Root, 1949

5. Russell Christian “Rusty” Root, 1955 to 2004. My brother.

6. Kyle Christian Root. 1983. Rusty’s son.

That’s really cool Casey. I wish we had harvest pictures back that far. Earliest harvest pictures I have are about 1950 or so. Thanks for posting

Well Bruce, show us what you got. 1950 IS now ancient history. I think of a 6602 as a modern machine, but as you told me "They use them for destruction derbies now".

Catskinner. My wife appreciated the compliment and says "Thank You".

Great pictures of the area. I drove grain truck one fall out in Hog Canyon, on the Work ranch, 1966, loved watching the John Deere on the side hill. Farmed most of the ground that fall with a D6C, new in 1965, great times and memories. thank you for sharing.

Hi Tom
A bit more info for you. The last photo of the 95H looking up the canyon is where the Work Ranch and Hillman Ranch meet the ranch that Rusty farmed.

Thems some neat photos! Thanks for sharing them. That little shaver must be waiting for his combine reel to come back from the shop, lol.

again thank your wife for the photo's and captions it is so nice to be able to track your family's history just shows what hard work and determination can accomplish over several lifetimes in the last pic it looks like his header might need some work

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
