Pretty interesting. This is a very dangerous profession. We lost 2 local operators in 2 years and when my Brother was a dozer operator for CalFire he was burnt over twice in Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez.

Great videos Casey.

It’s real easy to say “ well you’ve got a Cat there go put out the fire”.
When you’re in the canyons and rimrocks, the bravery can drain right out of you real quick.

It is amazing how fast little volcanoes can appear in the seat cushion.

Dangerous stuff, I knew Braden Varney who was killed last summer rolling down a canyon leaving behind a young family. I vote for keeping dozers out of real treacherous country like he was in, leave it for the air support.

Hi, DPete.
I agree. Dozers are remarkable machines in knowing hands but extremely dangerous when they reach the point of NO return, 'trubble' being that they can get to that point with little or NO warning, especially at night with insufficient lighting.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

DPete.

The gentleman that cuts fire wood on my property is a retired Calfire battalion chief and a good friend of both Braden and his father. He explained that it looked like Braden was trying to climb out of a canyon trap and got out on a granite slab, lost traction and slid to the edge where the dozer and he fell over the side. He thought that the fall was about 300 feet with about 100 feet of that being a free fall. I'm sure there will be a public report published next year.

It is my understanding that Braden was not a rookie, that he had over 10 years experience in the dozers.

Hi, Folks.
There is a series of videos on Youtube about using dozers on the fireground. Here is a link to first one:

And here is what happens when you try too hard to put on a show for spectators. Sadly, this lesson cost this operator his life:

And here is what can happen when you don't think things RIGHT through - Fastest Sideboom EVER:

BE SAFE!!!!!

Just my 0.02.

a few of the video's show how we parallel the fire line with our brush trucks to put out the leading edge--usually on the leeward side of the flames--we are there before they bring in dozers--and then we work with the dozers to make a fire break. Thanks God we don't have rough terrain like that in the PIne Barrens on Long Island--although I twisted off my drive shaft off once trying to get up a ravine--took a TD15 to get me out of there.
