Hi David,
thank you for putting up this link.

I am following this with much interest as I worked on many of ANARE (Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions) machines over the years including the Wilkes to Vostok and return D4.

It travelled 1800 miles between 17th Sept 1962 to 11th Jan 1963 on this traverse. I have a copy of the records of this traverse and have spoken to 5 of the 6 team members who did the traverse, including the operator of the D4.

They told me about some very interesting tales of hardship and facts.

Good Luck to all who embark on this venture as they are making history.

Cheers,
Eddie Bedwell

Hi, Mervyn Pepper.
Thanks for posting those photos but I think all of the stretched D8s that were able have now left Antarctica. There are a couple still down there, I think, either lost in a crevasse or broken through the ice out at sea. I seem to remember that some of them went to the Netherlands. Maybe Quad can shed some light on this. I also vaguely recall that at least one went to Canada for winter freighting.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Hi Deas,
Last i heard 2 were still there. Was at least 6 in 1984. Most had names. Pam and either mary ann or colleen were still there 2 years ago i think Dr Ernie from redpower was last person i read this from. So he should have the latest info.
Cat made a whole batch of them and some were sent to places other than antartica. Alan T lewis from chch nz had a serial number list of them all.
Big john was one of 2 specially made with D353s in them. And yes am fairly sure he was sunk or something similar.
Original Byrd station at south pole was built with materials towed there in 2 'tractor trains' as they called it in 1957 with 500 tons of materials, covering 646 miles.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
