I’ve been working on my RD4’s engine and just resolved the wet stacking issue (bad thermostat) however, the low idle lope has not gone away. When it lopes the fuel pressure drops then rises again. I’m pretty sure I need to work on the transfer pump but I wanted others input on what else could cause loping. I’m going to pull the injectors and try to check the spray patterns. I’ve read a few threads on here about governor issues but it throttles up and holds just fine.

Thanks in advance guys.

Hi,
suggest first check the actual Low Idle Speed you have as anything much below the spec. of 550 RPM could cause instability--lope--it may be beneficial to run it at around 575 RPM and up to 600 RPM and see if it smooths out.
Cheers,

I agree with that Eddie, the fuel pressure rise and fall is a symptom and not a cause, a good dose of WD40 or similar around the rack and pump quadrants may also help, could be a little bit of sticking in this area or the bushes each end of the rack.

The lope is all governor.......the fuel pressure variation will be in response to the rpm change .....not the other way around.

It is basically a result of wear in the governor components that leaves a little slack and makes the rack move very easily. That's not to say that the rack shouldn't move smoothly, but with some wear in the governor components that hook to it, you get the lope.

I have a 9U D6 that has a very responsive governor.......it lopes. On the old ones, it may be better to have that???
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Thanks guys. The rack and pumps were stuck when I first bought it so I did quite a bit of lube work to get them moving freely. I’m going to find a tach and then check the rpms relative to the throttle indexing and see if I’m just setting it too low.

In addition to fixing your t-stat I hope you are taking it out and working it at temperature to keep the wet stacking from returning. I wonder how many machines have had the engine overhauled to fix the wet stacking only to see it return when they only play and idle. Working them with a load at governed RPM is our friend keeping them running as they should.

I do try to work the tractor every time I crank it. On my project list next is getting/ fabricating a blade for it so I can really put it to work. I have a “drive way” that needs fixing and some land that needs clearing.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
