We are currently looking for new Then & Now stories for future issues of the magazine! If you or someone you know is restoring an old Cat, all you need to do is take a few pictures and write a short summary (we can help with editing). It's a great way to show off your hard work and be a part of the magazine. Send me a message if you are interested.

Kevin,

My 12 year old son and I are currently restoring a 1950 Cat D2 5U4775,
if you could give me your email address, I would submit a story and some
photos of our restoration to date. (Only because I could figure out how to
upload photos here)

Sincerely,
Jeff Schenkel

Hi Kevin,

I have a project underway that is documented in my webste. Some time ago, I had submitted to the bulletin board, links to the site but they are now obsolete and do no longer go directly to the Cat project. http://www.acmoc.org/bb/showthread.php?14900-Further-progress-on-my-HT4

I was about to post another "Further progress" when I saw your note on the board and was wondering if this project is something you would be interested in. The whole story to date can be seen at http://www.mervbergman.net/1955-caterpillar-d4-traxcavator-crawler-tractor/

I want to reinstall the pony motor on the diesel before it goes back in the tractor but I am waiting for pony motor parts, so the project is on hold right now.

Thanks for looking.

Hi Jon!
That's good to hear. Definitely send the photos my way along with a short story about the restoration, when you are finished. Thanks!

dad and i are currently converting our d4 from the original pilot which failed some parts are now no longer available or are dearer than poison and rare as rockin horse shit, to a 6hp diesel with electric start. it has been fun to work out the engineering. cad drawings are my friend.

current job is making all the adapter plates so we can not only bolt it down but have some adjustment too for gear lash etc.
most of the work has been done at home with basic shop tools and a drill press. the custom machining had to be sent out but everything else I can do at home.

this has become a costly project but it will be worth it in the end
even after the "helpful suggestions" of friends and others one suggestion was drive the original intermediate gear via hydraulic motor which came a bit late custom $400 gear already made, base plate half made. we had better pull the finger out and finish it as mum wants us to justify the expense she doesn't have oldmachineryitis & doesn't understand these things take time.

as a side note dont let other people use your classic cat machine it might go rattle stop.

"i reject your reality and substitute my own" - adam savage. i suspect my final words maybe "well shit, that didnt work"

instead of perfection some times we just have to accept practicality
