Hello all, Should I be adding any additive to the diesel #2 fuel in my D2?I have heard that an additive called Optilube XPD is really good for added lubrication of the injector pumps etc. Is this just a marketing gimmick or is there some truth to this. Thanks in advance for your informed replies. Hope you all have a ice day.
There is some merit to the idea. After EPA had most sulfur removed out of diesel fuel ( I think about 1985 ) it is not the lubricant it use to be. For the next few years every diesel injector pump that went bad was blamed on low sulfur diesel fuel formulation. People where adding many different things to the fuel. ATF was very popular, as well as 2 stroke oil, and STP, and some products like you are asking about.
I asked my fuel supplier at the time, their red diesel was coming from a small refinery out of Taft California that had an exemption. So their fuel still had sulfur. Out of site out of mind. By the late 90's I changed suppliers, as they closed the local bulk plant. I bought one fill up that came from their 90 mile away plant. Yes just a little costly. The small refinery was no drought long closed anyway. But my very slow brain did not think of fuel being less slippery for a number of years. Also about 2000 9u D6's started lining up to get parked at my place. I have used 4 different ones until about 2022. Since 2017 I have not put 100 hours a year all 6 tractors, that in theory run that are here. But still no fuel pump destruction from low sulfur diesel.
So I still think there is merit to adding lubricating solutions to modern diesel fuel in old vintage machines, but have not done it for mine.
Hi Ray54,
Thanks for your input. Much appreciated. Have a nice afternoon.👍👍
