Hello, have been in the process of buying a D7D that has been sitting for 5 years or so. Got everything running and moved her out to the yard at which time the right steering assist piston seems to have stuck in. Going back tomorrow, could it be the piston rusted? The left works fine. Have lowboy coming in two days to pick her up so hoping someone has some easy way to push that piston back out?

Thanks

Try prying it back at the steering clutch yoke adjustment after removing the access cover.

Hi OM

is there any chance of posting some more detail/information about the booster unit, eg., how it works?

I have one that behaves somewhat erratically. It often does not work at all, then begins to work after some running time. I have checked the oil and it seems okay. Next check is the filter unit ...when the weather improves a bit. Maybe the pistons are sticking too.

There's not much in the Cat books I have about the unit.

Was there another booklet specifically for the booster unit?

Also, can it be removed, eg., to check the seals which I presume sit somewhere underneath without major rear end surgery?

Thanks in anticipation😊

The booster used on the 6's,7's and 8's are all pretty much alike. Coverage of operation is better in the later service manuals. I particularly like the detailed 7 page section in the 37A and 44A service manual for the D6B. About the only thing that goes out on them are the seals and the self contained hydraulic pump. They default to manual override when the boost feature fails.

The self contained unit sits on top of the steering clutch case and is fairly easy to remove to the bench once the fuel tank is removed.

If you get to searching the BB archives there is some misinformation on removing the push rod seals. The drilling of retainer pins is not necessary.

Key to removal is to lift it straight up otherwise it tends to bind on the stub shafts coming up out of the steering clutch case. Lift point is the center forward bolt of the top cover.

Home is central New York, other than getting use to so many levers to work in a tight road building project (heavy woods), I think that I am getting the hang of it. Cutting a grade down a steep hill traverse while dozing stumps is quite interesting. Runs like a champ but does seem to have a heavy vibration when I bring the rpms up a bit.

Wouldn't mind coming and having a look - I'm in Rochester - where are you located?

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
