Got about 10 hours onto running this old D7 and (I was told by the person I bought it from as well) when I really get her into a good cut the turbo begins to howl like an air raid siren. Well maybe not quite that loud but it is no longer a turbo whine and more of a deep siren sound. It has a new manifold on it not that long ago so the surfaces should all be flat. Anyone have any ideas? If I let the throttle off the noise goes away.

Thanks!

Can you post a youtube so we can hear it change from "turbo" sound to "air siren" sound and back - might give some clues. Have you checked for obstructions or foreign objects between the air intake and the turbo? e.g. a partially collapsing flexible hose (don't know if these tractors have them or not), or something not right inside the air cleaner. Is it the correct turbo?

Are you sure the 2 air filters are clean ? This 17A turbo was not equipped with an air filter indicator . Did you notice black smoke when the machine had to work ?

Dirty air filters cause heavy axial forces on the impeller shaft .

My experience with this turbo was not the best one . After several turbo's we decided to operate the machine without the turbo and changed the rack setting to a lower value .
Have a nice day . johan7

Interesting comment re your experience. Most feedback from owner/operators in Australia where I imagine many hundreds of 17A's operated for many, many years has almost always be very positive and the sound is simply the best turbo sound ever😊

What issues did you experience in particular?

Well I can see about posting a video but I will need to get her to working on something to push hard again as I have now completed 920 ft underground water main which included over 600 foot of road building in woods so I could trench down it. This is a 1959 17A with no muffler and no, I am not use to what it should should like at all but the person I got it from was and he told me that it started "squealing" under a heavy load a while back. He replaced the intake manifold and gasket thinking it was leaking there. It doesn't blow black smoke but it does smoke pretty good when you put it to it with a full blade. I was pushing in 2nd gear filling the ditch back in ( 4ft wide and 6ft deep so plenty of heavy clay). I will check the air cleaners to see if that is the issue, guy was very meticulous on maintenance but it could be plugged with mice or mud wasp.

Thanks for the input. I may have some pics of the smoke color and will post those as well.

No collapsible hose on this. All hard steel or cast iron fittings, definitely original.

Thought you might like to see the bottom 100 yards of the ditch operation. 4 ft wide. Look close at the far end and you will see the 17A to the left of the orange excavator. 42 ton and those tracks are 36" pads, that's why the 17A looks small but those piles to the right are 4-5ft high and all heavy clay. That is what I was pushing when the siren would happen. OK, all the pics I have right now. Will post more of the smoke later.

I don't remember well what was the cause of our turbo failure . Probably we were not lucky , we had also turbo trouble with a 53A D8H . One day the operator pressed down the decelerator to shift the transmission and when he lifted the pedal the compressor side of the impeller broke into many pieces and ruined the engine .

But I remember that there was an after sales service from Cat . This included the mounting of an "oil pressure sequence valve". So , when starting the oil should first lubricate the turbo and then the rest to prevent dry running of the impeller .

I agree the original turbo sound allthough the impeller was of the slow type , running at "only" 30000 rpm , but it was a big impeller compared with the smaller and faster reacting turbo's of today .
Have a nice day , the Netherlands johan7
