I recently purchased a later model D7 17A or D7D with the front driven hydraulic control unit. Is this a #46 unit? Is there a tag on the hydraulic unit somewhere. I need a manual for the hydraulic unit. I am in the process of removing the D339 from the dozer as a rod put a nice viewing window in the side of the block. I am sure many questions will follow.

Yes, that would be a #46 Hydraulic Control s/n 48C1-up. Also known as a 173 Hydraulic Control s/n 48C1-up.

The 46 is a front hyd. unit and the 173 is a fender mount unit , two completely different systems.

The D7 17A used the #46 hyd. control. The manuals are sometimes available on ebay. I also have the manuals and I will help if you tell me what info you need.
The #46 hyd. control was also used on the D7E; Old Magnet is correct, it was then called the 173 hyd. control. There were three hyd. controls available on the D7E. The 173 was the front mounted unit, the 172 was the fender mounted unit and the 171 was used to operate a tilt cylinder on cable blade equipped D7E tractors.

Then the later D7E's had the 173B 34H series system on the fender with the lower long tank.

Check ebay for yourself, 173 Service Manual is about 20+ pages, also Parts and Operators Manual. Very good detail on servicing the #46 Hydraulic Control.

As always our aim is to never let a nit go unpicked...lol. Going back to the original post that asked for info on a D7 17A #46 hyd. control, Old Magnet correctly posted that the #46 control was the same as the 173 control 48C1 - UP. I don't know why Caterpillar changed the 172 control to the 173 control but it has caused the confusion in this discussion. I have attached the pics from my previous post that show the 171, 172 and 173 controls.
