The title tells the story. It seems like I can spin the petcock around and around. The only way I have found to know when it is shutoff is to temporarily remove the fuel line at the motor and check for flow. This is messy. Knowing when it is fully open is probably more important for obvious reasons. The Operator's Manual doesn't seem to give much information on this.

Finding it position and then just doing a quarter turn doesn't really fly with me.

The parts book says it is a 2B1397.

In addition the Operators Manual says to drain sediment and water from the tank regularly. But I don't have that second petcock on my tank. Is there another way to accomplish this task? Would it be wise to find the parts and fit them to theĀ  tank?. I have an early style fuel filter (no pre-filter).

Study the end of the cock closely - you'll see a line across it. Set the line across the valve and it's closed - set it in line and the valve is open. For the drain, you can buy one second-hand and install it. Install a short nipple and cap on the end of the valve and that way the tank won't drain if the cock is accidentally opened

Thanks. I'll look for the line. The way it is mounted makes seeing anything difficult as the square nub for operating it is facing up towards the tank and this also makes it a dirt magnet obscuring any markings. But knowinga mark is there will help.

Thanks! i had the same problem after replacing the fuel filters. i ended up taking a line off and watching the flow. i did not know about the line, but as TOP says, it is very difficult to see anything back in that cubby hole.also i had to cut off a wrench to work the valve. but i love the machine!

The fact that cat put a pre-filter and double fuel filters on in later models suggests that doing what the operator manual suggests and draining sediment and water from the tank on a regular basis which they give us no more than 50 hours of use is probably a good idea. They probably had problems with those things and that's why they upgraded the system on later models.

That "dimple" on the flat may be the indicator. That should be a quarter turn valve. (a simple but effective trick for those square heads - double nut a short bolt so you can put two sockets end to end, works for the standard size drive - effectively converts male to female socket ends allowing the female end of the second socket to fit the square head of the valve-plug-etc.)

normally they have a line diagonally across the square drive. when it line up with the outlet port its open. clean the cruds and paint off. so you can see it. the once confirmed mark it with white paint so you can see the bloody thing.

or remove it and fit a normal ball valve.

The square stem should have a line in it , cut or stamped. So wire brush the end, then stick the camera in there and look. Line is open if the mark is going the same way the fuel line is. The line turned 90 degrees to fuel line is off.
