Hello everyone,

I’m working on the steering booster and I have already disassembled it. I removed the bronze pistons by drilling out the locking pins, and I was able to get all the seals / O-rings / retainers needed for the rebuild.

However, there are a couple of parts I still don’t fully understand, possibly because English is not my first language — I speak Spanish.

In the parts diagram, one part is described as the “screen assembly”. I’m not completely sure what its function is. In the diagram it appears to be longer than the part I have inside my steering booster, or at least that is what it looks like to me. I marked this part in green in the picture.

There is also another part of the operation that I don’t understand. These are the parts located in the end covers on both sides, and in the parts manual they are described as “dowels”. I marked them in orange in the picture.

I would be very grateful if someone could help me understand what these parts do, how they should look, and whether the parts in my unit seem correct.

Thank you very much for any help.

Best regards,
Juan

You need to be looking at "Part Two" in your parts book.

Here's a cross section of what's going on.....

Thanks, Old Magnet.

When I took the steering booster apart and separated the hydraulic pump section, I couldn’t find the cylinder/filter or mesh part that the parts book calls the “screen assembly.” I’m attaching a photo so you can see what I mean.

I’m not sure if a previous owner removed it, or if maybe my machine doesn’t use that part. Mine is a D6 4R, so perhaps this steering booster is slightly different from the one shown in the parts book.

Do you know if that screen assembly should be there on a D6 4R, and if it is available as a replacement?

Thanks again for your help.

That screen was used on all boosters for early D6's and 7's including the 4R.

Here's a source although not very convenient to you.

Thank you very much!

I was just about to reply that I found out it is actually a filter or screen/mesh strainer.

I’m going to see if I can find one here in Argentina. If not, I’ll probably have to order it from that link.

Thanks again for the help!
