I am trying to find info on replacing the fiber links around the main clutch on my 1952 D6 8U when the link went I thought I had thrown a rod but then felt pulsing in the clutch took off cover and found 1 completly gone need to turn over to check rest I ordered 5 new links but never worked on this unit befor so thought I my try to get some sugestions.
My dad had run this dozer when it was new deep plowing after the 1951 flood near Topeka Kansas.
Any help would be apreciated Thanks

Nothing really complicated about replacing the clutch links. Can't remember if the 52 8U model had the two piece clutch cover or not but once you have access to the clutch it's just removal and replacement.

Thanks the more I look at it the easyer it looks like it will be to replace, I get the parts today ended up had 2 compleatly gone and 1 doesn't look good going to replace all 5. The cover is one piece but does have top part of bell housing that will come off but I think I can work on them through th access cover on top.

Couldn't tell from your description whether these links had been in there a long time or not. If it is a continuing problem the links are sensitive to engine/transmission alignment which can be adjusted with shims under the engine mounts.

The drive link system was always problematic and was finally resolved with the twin disc oil clutch.

My brother got the dozer about 20 years ago and replace 2 of the links shortly after he got it and none have been changed sence so I'm hoping changing the compleat set should last me awhile.

Also be sure to grease the pilot bearing with the correct grease,( I'm actually not sure what is best for that bearing) that clutch will hold on via those links for awhile if the bearing is failing or failed, the drive links take up the slack for a awhile, then eventually come apart, you would notice some vibration at certain r.p.m.'s. that bearing and engine alignment are probably the 2 things that can cause these to fail prematurely.
