Hello all, I have a D6B 44A that has been converted to a 1673 (70B2093) engine. Pulled the head off due to a failed gasket and found liners shot. Local caterpillar has liners, bearings, rings and gaskets however no availability on the pistons. Piston number is a 9L-2292 and I'm having a hard time locating even aftermarket pistons. I am seeking information on where to locate some new pistons and possibly some information from anyone who has swapped a 1673 or a D333 to a 3306. Thanks.

Hi Team,
be aware that sometimes the pistons have a forging/casting Body Number cast into the inner skirt area or even in the Piston Pin relief area of the piston.
They can be then machined to create some other P/No pistons for various applications.

Are you asking for the cast body P/Number or a stamped P/No, usually situated in one of the valve pockets or around the upper rim of the piston crown ?

Cheers,
Eddie B.

9L2292 is the body number for piston assembly 9L2294, which crosses to assemblies, 9L2309, 9L3053, 2S5567, also piston and liner groups, 9L2299 and 9L3054.

Charlie Schmitz installed a 3306 into Andrew's old D6C 99J. With Charlie gone, I don't know where it ended up. Andrew Schmitz bought the tractor new and worked it all over the north county pulling tillage tools until Charlie inherited it.

Some thoughts...
The 1673 is a 4.5" bore engine same as the D333a so swapping should not be an issue.
The D333c is very similar to the 3306 @ 4-3/4" bore and they can be swapped, The 99J started out with the D333c and changed to 3306 in 1973 so that's not a swap issue.
But my understanding is that going from a D333a to a 3306 is not a compatible swap. I'm not all that familiar with these swaps so I stand to be corrected. Just my recollections of previous conversations.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
