D4D steering clutch adjustment

Hello All. While adjusting the steering clutches on my new to me 78A I have run into something I am curious about. The clutch lever would have to be pulled clear back into you lap to get the clutches to release. I noticed that the linkages are sloppy and worn so I adjusted the turnbuckles so that the lever moved forward and you had more rearward travel before it hit your lap to help the clutches release. The adjustment helped the clutches release fully but as the lever got to the rearmost part of the travel you could feel a noticeable click and then the lever pulled easier. Is the click normal ? Both sides do it. Is it traveling to far and I need to adjust the travel stop bolt so it doesn't go that far?

Correct steering clutch adjustments should be done from the top of the case, to allow you 3-4" of free play? That "snap" you feel is probably the spring boosters attached to the back of the case. I believe PNW Hillbilly has a YouTube video which shows them on the underside of his 7U transmission cover. Your levers should be able to return on their own.

JM thanks for your reply. When looking at a parts book I can see a spring on the linkage internally. I wonder if what I am feeling is the linkage actually over centering and and that's why it gets easier. The levers return forward but occasionally it almost feels like they hang up a bit before they move back forward. If I adjusted the stop so that it doesn't overcenter it would stop that I think. l understand how to set the freeplay and I think I'm close on that. Next I will adjust the brakes.
