Good day gentlemen,
Got my D4 running and pushing dirt yesterday. It was a great day. Thanks guys.
Found some new problems, hopefully not to serious.
First off I didn't realize that it is a 4 speed, and not a 5. I thought all D4's had five gears.Cannot get it into reverse. Shifter works for all the 4 forward gears, and shfts good in and out of neutral. The steering clutches and brakes work good also. The left track works good, but the right one is binding and wearing the outer side of the sprocket. It looks fairly tight, maybe too tight? Also have a leak in the hydraulic cylinder on the right side, looks like seals. Are they hard to change?

Used it lightly for about an hour before it got dark. Went around and around, left then right, as I had no reverse. I got the fever.

When you say you have no reverse, what does the shifter do when you attempt to put it in reverse?

Does it go into the reverse position fully? Get over there, but not move into the notch fully, not even get over to that part of neutral area or what?

You could at least help diagnosing the problem by taking the shifter frame and baseplate off with the stick and look at the gates to see what the reverse one looks like and try it back and forth with a large screwdriver. The problem may be deeper in the transmission, but you need to start with the shifter.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Ok CCJersey,

It goes all the way over but won't go up.
Will take off the shifter frame and have a look.

Thanks

A likely problem that would fit that is in the transmission lock mechanism.

This is linked to the main clutch lever so the clutch has to be disengaged before the trans shifter stick can move any of the shift rails. Should be a set of spring loaded pawls that drop into notches in the shift rails whenever the clutch lever is not fully forward. Look for that one to be stuck or the spring broken.

Could also have a shift rail just rusted into it's guides in the transmission.

Thanks guys,

Have not had a chance to work on it since last weekend.
Work every day untill five and by then it is dark. Don't have a shelter or garage to work in, everything is done outside. Getting cold too, -8 today and suppose to snow on the weekend. But I'm going to do her anyways, snow or no snow, Got the yellow fever. Nothing like the sound of an old diesel . I am really happy that there are still people in this world that are genuine, and want to help others.

Ok guys,

Took the shifter off and found that the shifter rail for reverse was rusted. Sprayed it, and cleaned it up. It is now shifting into reverse.
The real test will be tomorrow when I try her out.

Thanks again

Whoo, Hoo!

They're tough, but still susceptable to rust.

I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
