Hi all, stumbled across this D4 today not far from home...apparently blown a head gasket as it was parked though a couple of dams close by were built by this girl!
While its not openly for sale, I was wondering what you all thought it was worth.

Blown head gasket? If the engine can be turned over, all to the good but if it's frozen up by water/rust in a cylinder it's gonna take some work. By the looks, it's probably a J or T model so how hard are parts going to be to find?

I'd start at scrap price and maybe work up a bit from there. Til you've checked it out, you won't know what all needs fixed and that's where the problems could start.

Sorry to seem so negative but that's how I generally approach buying these old critters. I'll start with making a list of good and bad features and go from there. .

In the third picture the sprocket looks to be worn out to where she'll jump on the chain. If they are that bad, I'd look very closely at everything else down there. That can get expensive real fast. Definately close to scrap price.-Jan

$500 to $1,000 max. is what that D4 is worth, and assume everything is worn out until the owner fires her up and successfully drives her onto your trailer, if he can.πŸ˜–mokin:πŸ˜†

My Mum used to say, "Michael, believe nothing you hear, little you read, all that you see", and I think that is good advice when buying old Cats that have been parked for a long time, and all too often I hear someone trying to flog off a old wreck with the soothing words, "oh, she won't take much to get going again".πŸ˜† I'm rebuilding a similar copy of this one right now, a 1939 built D4 7J, so can speak from experience on the topic, and most these old D4's have done 50,000 hours with no one ever lubing the bottom truck wheels, or changing the oil in the finals or gearbox!πŸ˜†
regards
Mike

There's one for sale in Tassie, in a dealer's yard. I can provide a contact details if you want to have a chat.

It's been there for years and he want several thousand for it because it is so 'rare'. He also has a faily well worn D2 for sale for 11k!

And the D4 engine is also stuffed - or 'frozen' as they say in the trade😊

I agree, it is easy to get carried away with these machines. It's not so bad if you have plenty of time and money to fix them but in reality it is only worth scrap value in that condition - I'd say 1k max or less.

The only saving grace with my D4 30A project is that it was bought for scrap value and hence the current wallet pain is not as severe as the sciatica it has caused.
