Question from left field - will the later model D311H engine, (aluminium rocker cover) swap into a Cat 212 grader with the older model D311 (same as 4U-5U D2 tractor) I am trying to get my old 212 grader going and parts are pretty costly for the old engine

Nothing on a D311H is compatible with the D311. Completely different engine.

Compatable might not be what he is after. Just has anyone swapped complete engines. It would be much cheaper to use the older 311, I think there were more made, more used parts available. Do not know what the new or used parts outlook is for the later industrial 311H

The D311h is a 4" bore x 5" stroke NA engine. The D320 is the turbocharged version.

I have a D320 in a 922b series 59a wheel loader, so I could do some measuring if it would help. Unfortunately I don't have an old D311 to compare to.

I doubt a 212 grader is a good candidate for a swap because (if I remember correctly) the oil pan bolts down to the rear axle and the radiator support hangs on the front(rear in the grader) of the engine. Just more dimensions to match up!
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

What parts do you need for the original D311?

D311H's were used in the 933 42A's up to s/n 42A5917 and then used the D320T's from s/n 42A5918 to end of production at 42A9202. Probably more common in Industrial applications and some marine but I would consider them to be an orphan engine.

Thanks for the interest, the D311 has been submerged in a flood, cylinder liners are unserviceable but the rest of the engine has been preserved, to get it running, piston liner kits, overhaul head and crank bearings to suit. Parts for these are difficult to find in Australia and very expensive through Cat, some are available only ex-America at present. Open to suggestions, but I agree its not feasible ( I forgot about the sump)

Don't be afraid to buy parts in the USA, I've found folks like Florin Tractor brilliant to work with, there is a guy in Melbourne who consolidates freight in California for cheaper shipping options than the US Post, I bought new D2 liners from Cat here in Oz 6 or 7 years ago but see they are currently not available here in Oz, but plenty available in the USA, most likely aftermarket, you could re-sleeve those liners of yours though they will be rock hard, probably diamond hard, sleeves are around $50 or $60 in Melbourne.

Do you use the Machinery Trader website to find parts, I see Expressway Spare and Smiths are showing crank bearings, plus many sources in the USA, I assume if you are like most us Catheads you are looking for the cheaper options first, like a complete donor engine, I was told years ago the D2 engine off worn out dozers was popular on paddle boats on the Murray.

Have you tried Tilly's up in Toowoomba, Paul Moore can also be a good guy to talk to, there were a lot of D2's made, and many are still on cane farms in banana bending land.
