I have just completed the rebuild of my 5U pony motor after twelve months of dicking around and getting caught up with no end of other things. It now runs as sweet as i should imagine it would when it was new. Thanks must be said to Mike and Eddie who held a impromtu gathering early last year detailing the art of installing new bearings and all the other great advice from this site on carby cleaning. I must say it is extremely satisfying being able to idle a pony motor with no choke.
I just now need some advice with regards to the old head gaskets that I reused. Upon installation and before starting the engine I noticed a very small amount of water could be ejected from one open petcock. I am assuming that the old head gasket is not sealing as well as it should. I did not use any gasket goo when I installed the gaskets but did clean what could have been a thin layer of silicone from them before installation. Note that there was no water leakage prior to the re-build.
Should I remove the gaskets and re-install with gasket goo (permatex) or do you think I just need new gaskets?
Thanks in advance.

I never reuse an old gasket. Once you torque them down and then remove and re torque them again, things can go really wrong really fast. it's just cheap insurance to install a new new ones. IMHO

Rodger that what Roger said, if in doubt new gaskets are only about $15 each from the Dealer, glad to hear she is running as she should.

Hi Palmer,
good to hear you have your pilot engine assembled and running--was beginning to wonder what was or was not happening after our day here.
You likely have had some crud fall out of the head or block and get trapped at one of the water passage openings in the gasket--seen it happen before--despite being sure all loose crud is out before installing the head.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Thanks for the advice fellas.
I will try the cheaper if not cheerful option first with the permatex and see how it goes, seeing that I have some on hand anyway. I didn't put any on the gaskets in the first place because I thought I had read in a past post that non was required. Maybe my gaskets have been on and off a few times in the past and are beyond the use by date
Thanks for the advice Eddie in regards to blockages. All the passages seemed to be pretty clear to start with although I did have a poke around to try and dislodge any crud that may have been in there. Not much of anything came out.
Cheers.
