My D2 has a by -pass oil filter . According to the book it should have a full-flow filter. The serial no on the engine is 5u5542. Should I convert it to full flow? I saw that someone suggested a hastings LF322 filter .Would that be for the by pass or full flow? If I can get a filter locally for the set up I have I may do that.

If you have a by-pass setup yes it would be adviseable to change it over but it takes some change over parts to do it & I don,t have a parts book to post the parts needed. I,m sure Old Magnet on here has the parts numbers & procedure to do it so possibly he,ll chime in. At the shop years ago I changed over dozens of them. Years ago there was a complete kit to it but I,m sure it isn,t available now but separate parts I,m sure are.

You need to change over ALL the parts in the conversion group, not just the filter. I emphasize ALL because I have seen some units with incorrect parts resulting in no filtration at all.

The current number for the disposable filter is a Cat # 1R0659 or a WIX #51161.
Don't recognize the Hastings number but could have been a disposable element for the old by-pass type.

The kit is no longer available from Cat but there are many bone yard candidates out there.

So are the cat and wix filter numbers you have listed for the by-pass or the full flow ? Thanks, The Farmer

Those are current numbers to replace the former 9F6700 full flow disposable filter.

If yours has the full flow kit in it then it would have a hex top on the bolt that holds the cover down on where the early ones that were by-pass had a T-handle on the bolt to remove the cover. That bolt with the hex nut on it is the 9F346 bolt that,s in the changeover group picture that OM pictured. The by-pass filter had a metal screen in the base & a small throw away filter element inside the screen.

Hi Team,
recently found this instruction sheet (Form No :-137-30605-01 dated 07-53) for the above, I believe it pertains to all engines of the day.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

EDB, that explains it to a "T" for the changeover process.

The wrenches mentioned are 1-1/2 inch to take the old base nut out and 1-3/8 inch to install the new. These are extended deep sockets. I made mine out of a couple cheap China sockets that I cut in half with the chop saw and added pipe extensions.

Do the J series tractors have a full flow or by-pass?
If I opened it up and there was a filter and a metal screen what am I looking at?

Drujinin, If there is a metal element inside along with a small throw away then it is a by-pass as the full flow only has one throw away in it & that,s all. Also from the outside the full flow has just a hex nut on the centerbolt in the top cover to hold it down where the by-pass has a stud coming up with a "T" handle on it.I don,t have a low SN 6U & 7U D4 but it seems by memory that the earlier "U" D4s still had the by-pass as I changed lots of them over at the dealer. The same goes for the early D2s & also the D6s.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
