I was wondering if anyone knows why some tanks are rear and some are side mount. I have a 1950 d2 5u with a side tank. Someone told me it is after market. Should I be looking for a rear seat.

Fender-mounted tank was an option. Can't remember what someone told me as to what advantage they conferred in certain situations, but there's nothing wrong with that tank. Use it and enjoy it! : )
And update that guy that told you so he can give more accurate answers! Yours still may be a non-Cat tank so post a photo of the part # on the tank and the cap and that will be a good indicator as to whether it's a Cat side-tank or not

I think originally the fender mount tank was standard and the seat tank was optional.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

The side tank was a popular special order for orchard work at least here in Northern California as you would sit quite a few inches shorter with the fender tank as you could mount the seat in between the fenders with the bottom of the seat directly on the transmission case. The seat tank sat on top of the fenders with a few inches fuel tank under the seat cushion.

I find the fender tank Cats easier to hook up to farm equipment than the seat tanks, you can see the drawbar a lot easier.

I find that interesting as what happens when you have to back up to an implement with a D-8, D-7 or the most common AG cat of all the D-6.

Out here where the largest AG market for Cat crawlers in the world basically the only folks that went and ordered a new D2 were guys with an orchard or a vineyard and to a smaller extent they were ordered new for artichokes and roses.

The big open field areas that needed bigger implements is where you triditionaly find the bigger D6 - D8 models and the D2 are found in the areas that were known for orchards.

If you need a seat tank to hook up to an implement you have no business on a crawler and I would hate to see you trying to hook up a D7 or D8 to a ripper, squadron disc or Atlas deep plow.

I'm with ccjersey on this one!
If you did a SEARCH, I believe you would find that back around 2010 there was a rather lengthy discussion on the option of Seat Tanks?
It was pretty much noted that most early tractors came with Fender Mount on both the D2 and the D4's. Seat Tanks were a later upgrade/option.
(its early in the morning so I maybe foggy)

I think it was only the D2 and D4 that had the fender tank option / default?

I like to thank everyone for the information on the fender tank. I am trying to post a picture of my cat but having trouble. I will try again. I have seen lots of pictures of fender tanks and mine is the same, I don't think mine is after market. Thanks everyone.

I am from Northern California, Sacramento Valley

Common to have fuel tanks on the left fender of D2 & D4, depending on configuration of the machine, Tanks could be placed in front of the operator (behind the starting engine (tailseat - Orchard)) or the seat mount as is common on D6-D8. One of the big drawbacks to seat mounted tanks - days of hand pumping fuel, seldom did one find a seat that had not been thoroughly drenched in fuel at one time or another.

I do not ever recall having an issue hooking anything up to the drawbar no matter which seat or tank. Swing the drawbar out of the way when you lift the tongue, then back into position. The "tailseats" were probably the worst as you always had to be aware of that overhanging seat - a real "headache" maker!

There were D2's used by the smaller orchards, lots of D4's in many applications. D7's were very common in the rice fields. I don't remember many D6's as they were considered to big for orchards and too light for the rice.
