I am sure this has been asked on this site before. I have a low hour 5U 78xx tractor and have a chance to pick up a late 4U Elect start parts tractor. What's involved to convert to Elect start and can it done in to 12 Volt??
Which engine are you wanting to convert to electric start, the diesel or pony engine? The pony is an easy conversion as long as all of the parts are still in place on the donor tractor. The choke and throttle linkage are part of the conversion too. Yes on 12 volt. I have had several U series tractors and never used 6 volt batteries.

Converting the diesel to direct electric start will involve pulling the engine and clutch housing so the clutch housing can be swapped for the one that's bored for the starter. I am sure there's lots of other small bits you will have to swap like battery box for pony motor etc.
Not a small job!
