Anybody happen to know the valve clearance on a D2 5J diesel engine intake & exhaust cold & hot settings?

How about the torque for the old high injector big old hold down nut?

I could also use the part number for the shoulder pin on the pony carburator linkage. The shoulder pin that hooks the govenor linkage to the carb. throttle shaft then the throttle control rod hits it.

I have a 5J parts book that covers my machine by serial number but my D2 has been updated over the years and I need a later parts book.

I also need a service manual and have been watching eBay but they're bringing to much $$$ nowadays..last one I watched went for around $125.00..I'll bet Cat would sell a new one for $70.00.

Thanks,
Chuck

The spec calls for .010 for the valves cold & they usually will loose about .002 hot.As for the torque on the injectors we always just snugged them up pretty tight with a bar in the wrench so not sure what if there is spec. for torque. Can,t just find what you need for the carb.

3B3735 is the stepped pin that the throttle control pulls on. This is from the later D311 arrangement of throttle and governor linkage. I have seen a machine screw with a stack of nuts on it used for that same purpose.

I believe the valve adjustment is supposed to be 0.010 hot isn't it SJ? So add the 0.002 if you do them cold.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Hi Team,
torque for above units is given in my D315 SRB ( Form No FE030522-02, 7-60) as 100 lbs/ft, this is the same spec. as for Capsule nozzles also.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Yes the .010 is fine for hot setting. I have two Cat spec. sheets from Cat here & they both are a little different.Yes I always gave valves a couple more thousands when cold if the spec. was for hot setting.I never could figure why settings in most cases are hot setting as most if not all the time you set them cold anyway.I just looked up in an operators manual & also in a general Cat spec. sheet for all the older engines & it does say .010 hot so give it .002 more for cold or would be .012 cold setting.

I thought a D2-5J is a 3400 series?
Can some one straighten me out?

Yes your engine would be a D3400 & the D315 is the later engine used in the D4 6U & 7U tractors & a few other places. As I said before I never saw the torque setting for the big inj. nozzles & have put in probably 100s of them at the dealer shop & never torqued them & the tool is made so you put a bar through the hole in the wrench to tighten so no place to put a torque wrench. Yes the later capsule nozzles do get torqued down in at 100 lbs.

Thanks everyone for all the info! Now I can maybe get this 5J back together & running this week!

SJ, after I posted about the injector hold down nut torque it dawned on me that the original socket was setup for only a bar. I used one once back in the mid 70's on our D74T. To remove my 5J injectors I made a socket out of a Craftsman 1-3/4" socket seeing that the original tool is bringing over $100.00 on eBay. My homemade socket has held up well seeing that I used a 1/2" impact on it to loosen the injector hold down nuts.

Thanks much!

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
